Ethiopia Opposition Boycotts Poll in Somali Region

update

Opposition parties in Ethiopia say they will boycott parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday in a remote eastern part of the country.

The main opposition parties in the Somali region accused the ruling party Tuesday of harassing their supporters and illegally distributing ballots.

Voters in Somali are electing members of parliament more than three months after the rest of the country went to the polls because of heavy rains in the region.

Ethiopia's election board has already announced the ruling Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front party has won a majority of seats in parliament.

The opposition has rejected those results and said it may challenge the ruling in court.

Both the opposition and ruling parties have accused the other of fraud in the May 15 poll. Shortly after the vote, security forces fired on anti-government protesters, killing 36 people.
