Oil-Rich Norway Holds General Election Monday

Norway holds its parliamentary election on Monday, with voters deciding which party alliance will best spend the Scandinavian country's vast oil wealth.

Norway is the world's third biggest oil exporter, and one of the world's richest nations. It enjoys low inflation, low unemployment, low interest rates and surplus revenues. But economists warn spending too fast could overheat the surging Norwegian economy and lead to rampant inflation.

The ruling center-right three-party coalition of Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik favors more tax cuts. The center-left opposition led by the Labor Party wants to use Norway's wealth to bolster the country's generous social welfare policies.

Recent opinion polls heading into Monday's vote to fill all 169 seats in parliament show the race will be close between the ruling coalition and the "Red-Green" opposition alliance.
