12 Year Old Ugandan Girl tells Congress About HIV/AIDS

A US congressional hearing was held Tuesday on how the AIDS pandemic has affected children. Those testifying called on Congress to help buy the special drugs that children need to survive infection with HIV, the AIDS virus.

Among the speakers was 12-year-old Josephine Nebukenya of Uganda, who is HIV positive. English to Africa reporter Joe De Capua spoke with her today about her testimony before members of congress. She says many of her friends have died from AIDS; and she called for greater funding to buy special drugs needed for pediatric AIDS patients.

Ms. Nebukenya was sponsored by the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which provides AIDS children to children around the world. More information can be found at www.pedaids.org.
