Northern Ireland's Paisley: IRA Disarmament a Cover-up

Northern Ireland's hardline Protestant leader Ian Paisley has accused the international committee overseeing the disarmament of the Irish Republican Army of a cover-up.

The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party said Tuesday the commission cannot say all weapons were put beyond use because no one knows how many weapons the IRA had.

Mr. Paisley spoke after meeting with retired Canadian General John de Chastelain, the head of the panel that oversaw the disarmament.

Mr. Paisley said Monday's disarmament announcement would not bring a resumption of talks between the IRA political wing, Sinn Fein, and the Democratic Unionists.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan welcomed the announcement of the IRA's disarmament and urged all parties to seize what he called a "unique opportunity" for peace.
