Young Girl Rescued After Spending Eight Days in Quake Rubble

Pakistani rescuers pulled a young girl from the rubble of her home Sunday, eight days after a devastating earthquake killed tens of thousands of people, including her parents.

Army spokesman, Major-General Shaukat Sultan, said soldiers rescued the polio-stricken girl in the village of Sanger in North West Frontier Province.

The spokesman said soldiers had been alerted to the girl's whereabouts by her two brothers, aged seven and nine, who arrived at a relief camp with their seven-month-old sister and begged for help. The two boys led the soldiers to the house where she was stranded.

The news gave shattered Pakistan a moment of joy on a day when heavy rains poured more misery on countless homeless survivors of the quake and the death toll was nearing 40,000.
