Gotovina in Hague Tribunal Custody

Croatian war crimes suspect General Ante Gotovina is in the custody of the United Nations tribunal in The Hague, arriving there following his arrest in Spain.

After General Gotovina's arrest in the Canary Islands Wednesday, authorities determined that he spent the years after his 2001 indictment on the run in countries around the world. He is expected to appear before the court next week.

The tribunal indicted him on charges of a role in the deaths of civilians during a Croatian army sweep through a Serb-held region of the country in 1995. The sweep sent thousands of Croatian Serbs fleeing the country.

The European Union and United States welcomed the arrest. But thousands of the general's supporters protested the arrest in Croatia's port city of Zadar Saturday. They call him a hero who helped free Croatia from the former Yugoslavia.
