Mao Asada Wins Ladies' Title at Grand Prix of Figure Skating

Japanese teenager Mao Asada has beaten world champion Irina Slutskaya of Russia to take the ladies' title at the Grand Prix of Figure Skating final in Japan.

Asada landed a triple axel as part of six triple jumps in her long program to earn 125.24 points. Her total of 189.62 points beat Slutskaya's total by more than eight points. Japan's Yukari Nakano was third.

In the men's program, world champion Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland recovered from a fall on his first jump to beat Canadian Jeff Buttle. Lambiel landed two quadruple jumps in his routine to finish with 230.1 points. Buttle finished with 214.34 points while Japan's Daisuke Takahashi was third (212.52).

In the pairs competition, Russian world champions Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin won with 193.6 points. China's Chang Dan and Zhang Hao were second (186.12), with Germans Alona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy third (180.1).

Another Russian couple, world champions Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov, won the ice dancing competition (165.72 points). Ukraine's Elena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov were second (154.53), with Canada's Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Luzon third (152.36).
