United States Extradites Indonesian Banker

The U.S. Embassy in Jakarta says the United States has extradited to Indonesia a banker sentenced in absentia for embezzling millions of dollars in state funds.

The embassy said David Nusa Wijaya, the former president of the Bank Umum Servita, was caught by FBI officials Friday in the United States - and was returned to Indonesia Tuesday.

Wijaya fled Indonesia shortly before he was sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzling about $139 million at the height of the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s.

Authorities in Jakarta say Wijaya could face new charges of evading arrest.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
