Tennis: Federer, Clijsters Win, Hewitt Loses at Australian Open

World number one men's tennis player Roger Federer of Switzerland easily reached the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne, but Lleyton Hewitt is out of the event.

Federer, the top seed, brushed aside German Florian Mayer in straight sets (6-1, 6-4, 6-0). Australian third seed Hewitt lost his second round match to Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina (6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2).

Fifth seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia overcame a first set loss to beat American Kevin Kim in four sets (4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 6-2).

In women's play, second seed and reigning U.S. Open champ Kim Clijsters of Belgium defeated China's Yuan Meng (6-4, 6-3).

Third seed Amelie Mauresmo of France beat compatriot Emilie Loit (7-6, 6-2). Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic ousted former champion Mary Pierce of France in straight sets (6-3, 7-5).

Martina Hingis of Switzerland continued her comeback with an easy win over Emma Laine of Finland (6-1, 6-1).
