UN Announces Appointment of Brazilian General to Command Peacekeepers in Haiti

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has informed the Security Council he intends to appoint Brazilian Lieutenant General Jose Elito Carvalho de Siqueira to command U.N. peacekeepers in Haiti.

The 59-year-old General Siqueira joined the Brazilian army in 1966. During his 40-year military career, he has served as director of human resources for the army and commander of the sixth Military Region in Brazil. He holds a doctorate in military sciences.

Siqueira would replace Lieutenant General Urano Teixeira da Matta Bacellar, also from Brazil, who was found shot to death in his hotel room in Port-au-Prince earlier this month. Investigators concluded he committed suicide.
