Kuwait's Parliament Says Ailing Emir Can Take Oath of Office

Kuwait's parliament has agreed to swear-in the ailing new emir, as he has requested.

Kuwait's official news agency (KUNA) reports Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah will take the oath of office Tuesday during a special parliamentary session

The announcement Sunday comes one day after Kuwait's cabinet said it was starting a constitutional process to transfer power from the emir to the prime minister, citing the emir's poor health.

Sheikh Saad, who is in his mid-70s, took office last Sunday following the death of Kuwait's long-time emir, Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmed al-Sabah.

Sheikh Jaber had been in ill health since 2001, and Prime Minister Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah has been the de-facto ruler of Kuwait in recent years.
