Uzbekistan Joins Eurasian Economic Community

Uzbekistan has joined a Russian-dominated economic group, further linking the Central Asian country to Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin Wednesday announced Uzbekistan's membership in the Eurasian Economic Community as the leaders of the group's member states met in St. Petersburg.

Uzbekistan joins Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan in the economic bloc.

The Eurasian Economic Community was created in 2000, five years after they joined in a customs union.
