2 Indonesian Women Infected with Bird Flu

Indonesian health officials say their tests show two women from the same area have been infected by the bird-flu virus.

The two patients, both from a town just east of Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, are being treated at a hospital there. The World Health Organization has not confirmed the results yet. So far, 23 people have been confirmed as having bird flu in Indonesia. Seven people who contracted the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus have died.

Elsewhere, Africa's first outbreak of the H5N1 virus strain was confirmed in Nigeria Wednesday.

The (Paris-based) World Organization for Animal Health says the virus killed 40,000 chickens on a farm in Kaduna state. No human cases of bird flu have been reported in the West African nation.

Avian flu has killed 88 people in southeast Asia, China, and Turkey since 2003.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
