Poland's Ruling Party to Call for Early Parliamentary Elections

Poland's ruling conservative party plans to carry out a promise earlier in the year to call for early parliamentary elections.

Law and Justice Party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski Saturday said at a political convention that he plans to submit a motion for the elections in the coming days.

Kaczynski wants the vote held before late May when Pope Benedict is expected to visit Poland.

The last parliamentary elections were in September. Law and Justice emerged as the leading party, but coalition talks with the rival center-right Civic Platform party failed.

As a result, Law and Justice has experienced difficulty passing legislation. It has had to seek support from smaller anti-Europe parties.
