France Funds Industrial Innovation Project

French President Jacques Chirac has announced funding to support an industrial innovation program.

More than $2 billion will be available for investment in six projects aimed at creating high-tech jobs in France.

Among them is a joint venture between French and German companies to develop an internet search engine, and the development of a modern train system.

Mr. Chirac said the project will focus on essential technological challenges for the future of France.

Other projects include creating new technology to deliver high definition television over cell phones, a diesel-electric automobile, energy-saving ways to heat and light homes and a project to make chemicals from agricultural products.
