South African Activist Strini Moodley Dies

update

Strini Moodley, one of the founders of the Black Consciousness movement during South Africa's anti-apartheid struggle, has died. He was 60 years old.

Moodley's family said Thursday the former activist died after a brief illness.

Moodley was a friend and colleague of the late Steve Biko, the Black Consciousness leader who died in police custody in 1977 after a beating.

Moodley was one of nine activists convicted on terrorism charges in 1976. He served a six-year sentence at South Africa's notorious Robben Island prison.

The ruling African National Congress paid tribute to Moodley and noted his death occurred as South Africa celebrated Freedom Day, commemorating the anniversary of the first all-race elections in 1994.
