Israeli Police Clash with Demonstrators Protesting Wall

update

Israeli police have clashed with Israeli and Palestinian demonstrators protesting the separation barrier Israel is building in and around the West Bank.

Police, some on horseback, fired teargas and rubber bullets at the demonstrators who had massed at the concrete wall in Ram, near Arab East Jerusalem.

At least 10 demonstrators have been arrested. One policeman was injured by demonstrators throwing stones.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has ordered his government to complete the wall quickly. It snakes in and around the West Bank and runs through some Arab villages, separating family members.

Mr. Olmert's government says it needs the barrier to prevent terrorists from infiltrating into Israel and carrying out attacks. Palestinians say the wall is a new Israeli effort to annex their land.

Israel had banned the demonstration, declaring Ram a closed military zone.
