Spain Reaches 2nd Round of World Cup, After Beating Tunisia

update

Spain has reached the second round of the World Cup in Germany while Switzerland and Ukraine both scored first round victories.

Fernando Torres scored twice and substitute Raul Gonzalez added another in Stuttgart Monday to help Spain rally to a 3-1 win over Tunisia in Group H. Spain has now extended its unbeaten streak to 24 games. Tunisia still has a chance to advance. But it must beat Ukraine in its last match.

Ukraine bounced back from a 4-0 drubbing by Spain by beating Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Hamburg. Ukraine got two goals in each half, including Andriy Shevchenko's first World Cup score.

In Dortmund, Switzerland beat Togo, 2-0. Alexander Frei gave Switzerland the lead in the 16th minute. Tranquillo Barnetta added an insurance goal in the 88th minute. Switzerland is tied with South Korea at the top of Group-G with four points each. France is next with two points, while Togo has been eliminated.

The remainder of the first round features four games each day. On Tuesday, host Germany plays Ecuador in Berlin, while Poland and Costa Rica face each other in Hanover. Germany and Ecuador have already reached the second round while Poland and Costa Rica have been eliminated from Group A. Group B will be settled after Paraguay takes on Trinidad and Tobago in Kaiserslautern, and Sweden battles England in Cologne. England has advanced, but the second team from the group will be either Sweden or Trinidad and Tobago.
