South African President Reported in Good Health After Heart Tests

South African President Thabo Mbeki is reported to be in good health after visiting a cardiologist and undergoing an angiogram*.

The government's Surgeon General Vejay Ramlakan released a statement saying the president is in "a normal state of health" and should be able to fully resume his duties after a few days of rest.

Mr. Mbeki, 64, underwent the tests at the Medi-Clinic Heart Hospital in Pretoria on Thursday. He was released from the clinic the same day.

On Wednesday, the president canceled a scheduled appearance before lawmakers, reportedly suffering from flu-like symptoms.

*An angiogram is an X-ray of the arteries in a person's heart. Doctors perform the procedure by injecting dye into the patient's blood vessels, using a thin tube called a catheter. The dye shows up on the X-ray, allowing experts to see if there are any constrictions.
