Leak Shuts Down Norwegian Nuclear Reactor

update

Officials in Norway say a nuclear research reactor automatically shut itself down early Saturday after detecting a small radiation leak.

The Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority says no radioactivity above normal levels has been detected outside the steel building housing the reactor.

No injuries have been reported.

The small reactor in the town of Kjeller, 20 kilometers northeast of the capital, Oslo, is run by the Institute for Energy Technology, which says the situation is under control.

There has been no word on what caused the leak.

Norwegian law bars nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons, but the Scandinavian country has two small nuclear reactors for research purposes.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
