update

President Bush plans to meet Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington next month for talks on cooperation in the war against terrorism.

The White House released a statement Tuesday that said the talks will be held October second and will include discussion on how to counter Kurdish rebels in Turkey.

The statement said the two leaders also will discuss ways to advance freedom in Lebanon, Iraq and other parts of the Middle East. And they will talk about political and economic reforms in Turkey, as well as U.S. support for Turkey's efforts to join the European Union.
