Police in Indian Kashmir say at least five policemen were wounded when suspected separatist militants attacked a police checkpoint in Srinagar.
The police say two civilians also were wounded when suspected rebels threw a hand grenade at the checkpoint Wednesday in the summer capital of Indian Kashmir.
Elsewhere in Srinagar, witnesses say Indian police fired tear gas to disperse hundreds of people protesting the planned execution of a Kashmiri man for plotting the 2001 attack on India's parliament.
Protesters marched through the city burning tires, throwing rocks at police and chanting that Mohammed Afzal is innocent. At least 17 people were injured.
On Tuesday, a court in New Delhi set October 20 as his execution date after finding him guilty of plotting the parliament attack that killed 14 people.
Afzal can appeal to the Indian president for clemency. Lawyers say they will decide on filing a plea after consulting with Afzal.
India blamed the 2001 attack on Pakistan-based militants, which Pakistan denied. The attack brought the nuclear armed neighbors close to war.
