Gunmen Kill 8 Afghan Workers at US Base in Afghanistan

Gunmen have killed eight Afghan civilian employees at a U.S. military base in eastern Afghanistan.

Police say the attackers ambushed a car carrying the workers as they left the base in the mountainous Korangal area of Kunar province late Thursday.

Elsewhere, coalition and Afghan forces killed one militant and captured four others in a raid in nearby Khost province Friday.

A suicide bomb attack in the same province killed one Afghan soldier and wounded five troops and three civilians.

Pro-Taleban and al-Qaida insurgents are active along Afghanistan's eastern border with Pakistan.

Meanwhile, NATO allies are facing pressure to re-deploy troops from eastern Afghanistan to help combat a growing insurgent threat in the south.

The Dutch cabinet Friday decided to send 130 more troops to southern Afghanistan to join the more than 1,000 Dutch troops already there.

Canada's government has asked for more support for its forces in southern Afghanistan to protect development and reconstruction projects.
