Putin Talks with Iranian Diplomat About Nuclear Program

Russian President Vladimir Putin has met with top Iranian diplomat Ali Larijani to discuss cooperation on Iran's nuclear program.

Russian media quote Kremlin officials as saying the meeting in Moscow Saturday was to focus on Iran's nuclear program, as well as international and regional problems.

Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Security Council Secretary Igor Ivanov also took part in the talks.

On Friday, Iran's Larijani warned that possible sanctions by the United Nations Security Council would not promote a political solution to the nuclear dispute. European nations have filed a draft resolution including sanctions at the Security Council.

But Russia has called for changes to the motion, such as removing all references to a nuclear power plant that Moscow is helping to build.

The draft proposes sanctions against Iran for defying an August 31 deadline to stop enriching uranium. It exempts the power plant from direct measures, but it would cut the delivery of nuclear fuel to the facility.

The United States and its European allies accuse Iran of seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Iran says its activities are for peaceful purposes.
