NHL: Penguins Edge Capitals

The Pittsburgh Penguins came from behind to defeat the Washington Capitals in a National Hockey League shootout, with help from Evgenic Malkin.

The Capitals led 4-0 in the second period, but Pittsburgh battled back, with Malkin contributing a goal and an assist in regulation. The Russian center then scored the decisive goal in the shootout to beat Washington, 5-4.

Denver's John-Michael Liles and Joe Sakic each scored power-play goals in the third period to defeat Carolina, 5-2. The Colorado Avalanche have not lost to the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes since 1996.

In San Jose, California, the Sharks shut-out the Phoenix Coyotes 4-0. Goaltender Vesa Toskala stopped 23 shots for his third straight shutout. San Jose has won seven of its last eight games.
