Indonesian Boy Dies of Bird Flu

An Indonesian hospital official says a teenager has died of bird flu, raising the country's death toll to 58.

Indonesian officials said the 14-year-old boy died Wednesday, four days after being admitted to a Jakarta hospital.

Indonesian officials say another person is also being treated for the deadly H5N1 virus, raising the number of confirmed human infections to 76.

Meanwhile, China's Health Ministry said Wednesday that a farmer has contracted bird flu, the first human infection in months.

It said the man fell sick December 10, but that China's Center for Disease Control did not confirm until Monday that he had contracted H5N1.

The ministry says the patient has fully recovered and checked out of a hospital on Saturday in Tunxi, in the eastern province of Anhui.

Vietnam is reporting that bird flu has spread to a fourth province, spurring the slaughter of nearly two thousand birds in Kien Giang.

The virus infected flocks in three other southern provinces last month.
