Hundreds Detained in Recent Rioting in Copenhagen

update

Danish authorities say riot police have detained 188 people while breaking up overnight violence by protesters angry about the recent eviction of squatters from a downtown Copenhagen building.

Police say violence erupted after midnight in two neighborhoods when demonstrators began throwing molotov cocktails and stones, and setting cars and buildings on fire. One injury is reported.

More demonstrations are planned for Saturday.

More than 400 people, mostly youths, have been arrested in the same areas of Denmark's capital since Thursday when squatters and their supporters began clashing with police. Authorities say foreigners are among those arrested.

The new owners of the building won a court order last August evicting the squatters, who have refused to leave the premises used as a youth center since the 1980s.
