2007 Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

News stories about corruption in the United States and the drawbacks to China's explosive economic growth are among the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winners, the top annual U.S. journalism awards.

Reporter Brett Blackledge of the "Birmingham News" won for his investigation into corruption at Alabama state colleges. "Miami Herald" reporter Debbie Cenziper won for stories about waste and favoritism at the Miami housing agency.

Staff at "The Wall Street Journal" newspaper won two of the 10-thousand-dollar prizes for reports about stock benefits for corporate executives that triggered investigations, and for stories about the social and environment drawbacks from China's booming economy.

"New York Times" reporter Andrea Elliot won for her stories about an immigrant imam at a mosque in the United States.

Associated Press photographer Oded Balilty won for his photograph of a solitary Jewish woman defying Israeli soldiers as they removed illegal settlers in the West Bank.

Writers at the "New York Daily News" won for what the Pulitzer judges called "compassionate and compelling" editorials about the health problems of people who worked at the site of the September 2001 terrorist attacks in New York city.

Pulitzer prizes were also awarded to American novelist Cormac McCarthy for his book, "The Road," about a father and son who wander a post-apocalyptic America.

Journalist Lawrence Wright won for his non-fiction book, "The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda and the Road to 9/11," about the rise of Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization.

The Pulitzer board gave special recognition to Iranian photographer Jahangir Razmi, whose 1979 photo of an Iranian firing squad won a 1980 Pulitzer. Razmi had been anonymous until a "Wall Street Journal" article in December identified him as the photographer.

This was the 91st year the prizes were awarded by Columbia University, based on recommendations from a special board.

The awards were established by Joseph Pulitzer, a famous 19th century newspaper publisher.
