The U.S. Senate has approved the nomination of James Glassman as the new chairman of the government board that oversees the Voice of America and other U.S. international broadcasting stations.
The Senate on Tuesday approved Glassman to chair the Broadcasting Board of Governors.
Glassman is a journalist and author from the eastern U.S. state of Connecticut. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of The American, a magazine of ideas focusing on business, economics and public affairs. He wrote an investment column for the Washington Post for more than a decade. Glassman has also written two books on finance.
He is to serve the remainder of a three-year term left by his predecessor, Kenneth Tomlinson, as well as a full three-year term ending in 2010.
Tomlinson, who became BBG chairman in 2002, asked President Bush earlier this year not to renominate him. Last year, a State Department investigation found Tomlinson had used his government office for personal business and had improperly awarded a contract to a friend.
