MLB: Mariners Beat Blue Jays in Hargrove's Last Game

In Major League Baseball, Seattle's Jose Guillen drove in a game-ending run in the ninth inning, giving the Mariners a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Guillen tied the game with a home run in the eighth inning.

The victory made Seattle manager Mike Hargrove a winner in his final game. Hargrove unexpectedly announced his resignation hours before Sunday's game in Seattle. The 57-year-old Hargrove says he no longer has the passion for the game he once had, and that to be fair to the team and himself, he can no longer continue as the Mariners' manager. Assistant coach John McLaren will manage the team for the remainder of the season.

Seattle's team has turned around its fortunes this season and is in second place in the American League's West division, with 45 wins and 33 losses. The Mariners have won 10 of their last 11 games. Hargrove finishes with a record of 1,188 wins and 1,173 losses as a major league manager over parts of 16 seasons with the Mariners, Baltimore Orioles and Cleveland Indians.

In other American League contests Sunday, the Oakland Athletics scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to beating the New York Yankees, 11-5. The Los Angeles Angels edged the Baltimore Orioles, 4-3. The Cleveland Indians won for the sixth time in seven games, getting by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, 3-2. Detroit's Marcus Thames homered with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Tigers a 1-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. The Texas Rangers tripped up the Boston Red Sox, 2-1. And the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals, 3-1.

In the National League, Florida's Josh Willingham singled in the game-ending run in the 10th inning to give the Marlins a 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves. Cincinnati manager Jerry Narron was fired after the Reds dropped an 11-7 decision to the St. Louis Cardinals. Washington's Jesus Flores hit his first major league home run - a two-run shot to give the Nationals a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Washington snapped a five-game losing streak.

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets, 5-3. The Chicago Cubs downed the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-1. The Houston Astros crushed the Colorado Rockies, 12-0. The San Francisco Giants vanquished the Arizona Diamondbacks, 13-0. And the Los Angeles Dodgers ended a five-game losing streak to San Diego with a 5-0 win over the Padres.
