Pakistan Says Any US Strike Against Militants on Its Soil 'Unacceptable'

Pakistan says any U.S. action against militant targets on Pakistani soil would be unacceptable.

Pakistan's foreign ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said Monday any such action will be irresponsible and dangerous.

Aslam said that like any other country, Pakistan remains deeply concerned about the possibility of terrorists establishing sanctuary on its soil. But she said Pakistan is capable of taking firm action against extremists.

On Sunday, a top Bush administration official, Homeland Security Advisor Frances Townsend, said the United States will not rule out a military strike on Pakistani soil to combat terrorist cells.

A U.S. intelligence report released last week said al Qaida terrorists had been given a safe haven in Pakistan's remote tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

Militants have stepped up attacks in Pakistan over the last two weeks, killing nearly 200 people in a series of suicide bombings.

In the latest violence, a roadside bomb wounded at least five paramilitary soldiers on patrol in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal region.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP.
