Study: Older Americans Staying Sexually Active

A study from a U.S. university shows the majority of older Americans continue to maintain active sex lives.

University of Chicago researchers found 73 percent of Americans between the ages 57 and 64 said they were sexually active. Between the ages 75 to 85, that number drops to 26 percent.

The figures, published Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine, are based on a survey of 3,000 Americans - in the first comprehensive study of sexual activity among people in this particular age-range.

Researchers say the study provides an important measure of what is considered normal sexuality as people age.

The study also says there is a link between sexual activity and overall health. Men and women were more than twice as likely to have engaged in sexual activity if they considered themselves in good health.
