Mubarak, Gadhafi Hold Talks in Cairo

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met with visiting Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in Cairo on Tuesday.

Egypt's official news agency (MENA) quoted an Egyptian presidential spokesman as saying the two discussed the situation in western Sudan's war-torn Darfur region. The spokesman also said Egypt is contacting Sudanese government and rebels leaders in an attempt to reach a settlement there.

On Wednesday, Mr. Mubarak will review the 1,200 Egyptian security personnel who are to take part in peacekeeping duties in Darfur.

A new, joint African Union and United Nations force took over from a smaller AU mission on Monday.

Nineteen African and non-African nations are contributing military personnel to that joint force. But only seven of those nations had sent their troops as of December 31. Additional nations are contributing police personnel to the effort.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP.
