Berlin International Film Festival Opens

The Berlin International Film Festival opens Thursday, with the world premiere of a documentary about the legendary British rock band, the Rolling Stones.

Directed by Oscar-winning American director Martin Scorsese, Shine A Light is the first of about 400 films from around the world to be shown during the festival. Scorsese and members of the Stones will be on hand in the German capital.

Music is a common theme of many of the films being shown, and other musicians like Neil Young and Patti Smith are expected to appear both in-person and on-screen.

The festival continues for 11 days, and is drawing a host of Hollywood celebrities, like Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson. U.S. pop star Madonna will be unveiling her directorial debut film, Filth and Wisdom.

More intense films will also be featured, on topics ranging from the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq to child soldiers in Eritrea.
