Bird Flu Outbreak Reported in Northeastern India

Authorities in India say a suspected outbreak of bird flu has been reported in a northeastern area near Bangladesh.

A Tripura state veterinary official says about 3,000 birds have died in the past week. He says symptoms indicate that it could be bird-flu, however, final results are expected on Monday.

He says health workers are preparing a mass slaughter of chickens and ducks in the area if bird flu is confirmed.

Last month, India confirmed an outbreak of bird flu in West Bengal state, also bordering Bangladesh.

Authorities killed more than 90,000 birds in an effort to control the spread of the virus.

No cases of human infection have been reported in India.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
