Wildfire Burns Homes Near Yosemite Park in California

Officials in California say a rapidly-spreading wildfire has burned eight homes and threatens as many as 2,000 others near Yosemite National Park in the central part of the state.

Firefighters said Sunday the blaze had burned some 7,300 hectares and was moving quickly due to dry timber in the area and steep terrain that has complicated attempts to put it out.

About 2,000 firefighters are battling the fire.

As a precaution, electrical power in parts of the threatened area has been cut off. Officials say the fire was ignited by a person shooting at targets.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
