British Police Arrest 5th Suspect in Alleged Plot to Kill Prime Minister

Police in Britain have arrested a fifth man in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Police say the 29-year-old suspect was detained Tuesday in Derby in central England about 200 kilometers northwest of London.

Four other men are already in custody in connection with the death threats. Three were arrested earlier this month at the Manchester Airport as they tried to leave the country. Police picked up a fourth suspect in the nearby town of Blackburn Tuesday.

The threats targeting Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his predecessor Tony Blair were posted on a jihadist web site in January.

The site, run by a group that calls itself al-Qaida in Britain, also demanded the withdrawal of British troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
