Pope Benedict Names Timothy Dolan Archbishop of New York

Pope Benedict XVI has named the archbishop of Milwaukee, Timothy Dolan, as the new archbishop of New York.

The 59-year-old Dolan will succeed 76-year-old Cardinal Edward Egan, who is retiring from the post, which is the most prominent in the U.S. Catholic Church.

In the 1970s, Dolan studied at the Pontifical North American College in Rome, an elite seminary that has produced several prominent U.S. church leaders. Two decades later, he became the institution's rector

Fellow theologians say Dolan's personal warmth and intelligence make him perfectly suited for the position. He is considered a fervent supporter of the conservative teachings of Pope Benedict.

The New York Archdiocese serves some 2.5 million parishioners.
