Police in Bangladesh say they have arrested the suspected ringleader of last week's border guard uprising that left around 70 people dead.
A spokesman for Bangladesh's elite forces, A. K. Azad, says Tauhidul Alam and several suspects are in custody following a raid in the capital, Dhaka.
The spokesman said Tauhidul Alam had met with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during negotiations and promised to surrender. But the mutiny went on for another day until army troops moved into the guards' headquarters last Thursday.
Meanwhile, authorities are still searching for 1,000 border guards and their accomplices. Military investigators are conducting a separate probe.
Border guards launched a two-day bloody mutiny in their headquarters Dhaka last week, disgruntled over pay and other working conditions. The Bangladesh army says 56 officers were killed along with bystanders, civilians and other regular army troops. Officials say seven army officers are still missing.
Fifty officers were buried on Monday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been praised for her swift reaction to the mutiny which caused chaos in the capital. Tanks rolled through the streets of Dhaka and officials quickly reestablished control of the guards' headquarters.
