Obama Creates Post for Global Women's Issues

U.S. President Barack Obama has announced creation of a new foreign policy position focusing on global women's issues.

The president Friday nominated Melanne Verveer to the post of ambassador-at-large for international women's issues. She will work at the State Department under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

The White House says the new position reflects the importance of global women's issues to the Obama administration.

Verveer previously worked as chief of staff for Clinton when she was first lady, and also worked as an aide in the White House for former President Bill Clinton.

Verveer is also the co-founder and chair of Vital Voices Global Partnership. The White House describes the group as an international non-profit that invests in emerging women leaders.
