Four Indian troops and six suspected Muslim guerillas have been killed during three days of gunfights in Kupwara district of Indian administered Kashmir. Indian Army sources say the gunfights are continuing.
An Indian Army officer is among the four troopers reported dead in a forested area of Indian administered Kashmir.
The army says six guerillas have been killed in gunfights since Friday after troops surrounded a militant hideout near the border with Pakistani-controlled territory.
Indian Army spokesman in Srinagar Lieutenant Colonel J. S. Brar told VOA the army is assessing the situation.
"The snow is melting (in the passes) and they must be trying to come in (infiltrate)," Brar said. "The assessment is going on, because the encounters are still going one and their exact strength can be told once the encounters are over. Then we can tell whether they had crossed over or something."
Saturday, India and Pakistani soldiers exchanged fire in another area, across the Line of Control that divides Kashmir between the two neighbors.
Both sides accused each other of violating the border ceasefire.
An anti-India Muslim insurgency broke out in Indian administered Kashmir in 1989 where anti-India sentiment runs deep.
