Gunman Kills 13, Himself at Azerbaijan University

Police in Azerbaijan say a gunman went on a shooting spree at a university in the capital, Baku, killing 13 people and wounding another 13.

The Interior Ministry says the suspect, identified as Farda Gadirov, a Georgian citizen of Azeri origin, entered the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy early Thursday. He climbed five floors of the building, shooting everyone he encountered.

After the rampage, officials say the 29-year-old gunman shot and killed himself.

Officials say at least three foreign citizens - one Syrian and two Sudanese - are among those wounded.

Local news media had earlier reported that two gunmen were involved. However, police and Interior Ministry statements made no mention of a second attacker.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has offered his condolences to the families and friends of the victims.

The academy is one of the most prestigious universities in the former Soviet Union, and is considered a leading international institute for training oil industry specialists.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
