Dateline: The Opium War in Afghanistan - 2001-08-08

The Taleban rulers in Afghanistan have detained eight foreign relief workers and 16 local staff members who are accused of preaching Christianity to Afghan Muslims. Diplomatic efforts are underway to secure the release of the detainees.

The Taleban rulers control most of Afghanistan. But fighting continues. The ongoing conflict has taken a tremendous human and economic toll on the country.

In this edition of Dateline, Neal Lavon and Nour Rahimi of VOA's Dari Service look at one researcher who visited a village in northeastern Afghanistan to get a view of the fighting and catalogue its political and economic consequences.
