Weightlifter Earns Three World Records at Goodwill Games - 2001-09-01


Russian weightlifter Velentina Popova has set three world records at the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia.

Popova now owns records in the women's 69 kilometer division in the snatch, clean-and-jerk and combined total for both disciplines.

After a world record snatch of 113.5 kilograms Saturday, Popova lifted 143.5 kilograms in the clean-and-jerk, for a total of 256 kilograms.

Popova, a silver medalist at the Olympics last year, earned $25,000 dollars for each record, and $2,000 for each gold medal, for a total of $81,000.
