Hewitt Reaches 3rd Round of Japan Open - 2001-10-03

Top seed and U.S. Open tennis champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia has easily reached the third round of the Japan Open tournament in Tokyo while American Monica Seles scored an easy win in women's play.

Hewitt scored a straight-set win over Germany's Marc-Kevin Goellner, 6-2, 6-2. Second seeded Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands also scored an easy win over German Christian Vinck (6-3, 6-4). Fourth seeded Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden had little trouble defeating unseeded Japanese player Hiroki Kondo in straight sets (6-1, 6-3).

Third seed Rainer Schuttler of Germany was a straight-set winner over Magnus Larsson of Sweden (6-3, 7-5).

In the women's draw, Monica Seles scored a straight set win over South Korea's Cho Yoon-Jeong (6-2, 6-3). Japan's Ai Sugiyama overcame a second set loss to beat Slovenia's Katrina Srebotnik in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-1).

Sixth-seeded Rita Grande of Italy defeated Barbara Schwartz of Austria in straight sets (6-4 ,6-4). Pavlina Nola of New Zealand defeated seventh seed Nathalie Dechy of France in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 7-6).

German tennis player Tommy Haas has reached the second round of the Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow with a straight-set win over American Bob Bryan (6-2, 6-4).

Also reaching the second round was seventh seeded Guillermo Canas of Argentina, a straight-set winner over Sweden's Andreas Vinciguerra (6-0, 6-1).

In the women's bracket, sixth seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy defeated Martina Sucha of Slovakia in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria defeated Anke Huber of Germany in straight sets (6-3, 7-5).
