Bush Pledges $3 Billion Package for Workers Affected by Terrorist Attacks - 2001-10-05

President Bush says the U.S. government will provide $3 billion in emergency aid to American workers who lost their jobs due to the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. He made the announcement during a visit to the Department of Labor.

President Bush says America's leaders hear the cries of those who have been laid off. He says the government will provide $3 billion in emergency aid to workers affected by the terrorist attacks. Mr. Bush says Washington will also help states provide extra weeks of unemployment benefits.

The president emphasized it is all part of his plan to stimulate the American economy. "This is a way we can help," he said. "This is a set of principals for congress to work together to help the American people."

Earlier, the Labor Department reported that new unemployment claims last week reached a nine year high. The travel and tourism industry was especially hard hit.
