Duval Leads Dunlop Phoenix Tournament in Japan - 2001-11-09

update

British Open golf champion David Duval of the United States continues to lead the Dunlop Phoenix tournament in Miyazaki, Japan. Duval shot a four under par 67 Friday to take a two-shot lead over compatriot David Gossett.

Duval thought he was on his way to a great 30th birthday present when he birdied four of the first five holes in the second round, but he failed to continue his early momentum. Duval said he was not pleased with his score after such a great start.

Tied for third place three strokes in back of Duval are Australian Aaron Baddeley and Japan's Taichi Teshima. Defending champion Shingo Katayama of Japan shot the day's low round with a 65 to join American Jerry Kelly and Las Vegas-based Englishman Ed Fryatt four shots off the pace.

Duval received a nice welcome from the mostly Japanese gallery, who sang happy birthday to him on the first tee, in English no less.
