ICC Refuses Request to Remove Referee - 2001-11-22

The International Cricket Council has refused India's request to remove referee Mike Denness from India's third test match against South Africa beginning Friday in Centurion.

The Indian cricket board wanted Denness removed after he penalized star player Sachin Tendulkar and five others for ball tampering, dissent, and failing to control themselves.

Tendulkar was given a one-match suspended ban and fined 75 percent of his match fee for tampering with the ball during the third test with South Africa in Port Elizabeth. Skipper Saurav Ganguly was fined for failing to control his players. Four other Indian players were fined or suspended for showing dissent to a match official.

ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said his organization is satisfied that all proper procedures have been followed and there is no reason to remove Denness.
