India, S. Africa Advance to Finals of Field Hockey Tourney - 2001-12-14


India and South Africa have advanced to the final of the Champions Challenge field hockey tournament in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

India defeated Argentina, 2-1, behind goals from Jugraj Singh in the 26th minute and Gagan Ajit Singh seven minutes later. Argentina opened the scoring with a goal from Tomas MacCormik in the 15th minute. The win gave India 10 points from five matches.

Later, South Africa defeated host country Malaysia, 1-0, on a 41st minute goal from Mike Cullen. South Africa also finished with 10 points and will play India for the title Saturday. The winner of the tournament will advance to next year's Champions Trophy tournament in Cologne, Germany.

Also Thursday, Japan beat Belgium, 6-2, and will play the Belgians again in the fifth-place match Saturday. Argentina takes on host Malaysia for third place.
