Baseball: Gonzalez Agrees to $24 Mil Contract with Texas Rangers - 2002-01-09

Major League Baseball's Juan Gonzalez has agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the Texas Rangers.

The 32-year-old Gonzalez, who turned down two-year offers from the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles, rejoins the team where he started his major league career.

Reports say the deal with Texas calls for a $2 million dollar signing bonus and is contingent on Gonzalez passing a physical examination, expected to take place in the next few days.

Gonzalez won the American League's most valuable player award with the Rangers in 1996 and 1998 before being traded to Detroit in November 1999. He played for Cleveland last season, hitting 35 homers and driving in a team high 140 runs.
